Imperium Brass: The Ideal Material for Brass Bushing Heaters
THERMAL UNIFORMITY
The most critical requirement of any nozzle heater is to provide thermal uniformity across the entire length of the nozzle. This uniformity helps insure part to part quality and a stable process regime.
This uniformity is provided by the design of the Imperium Brass Heater. The brass bushing has grooves machined into it in which the heating element is mechanically pressed in . This means the heating element is not directly touching the nozzle itself. This is important because the heat flux or flow moves from the element into the brass bushing and THAN into the nozzle. This flow causes the temperature to equilibrate and become highly uniform along the entire length of the nozzle . An additional groove can be machined in the bushing to allow for a thermocouple . The tip of the thermocouple can be positioned very close to the nozzle tip.
PRECISE FIT-UP
Nozzle heaters do not work well or for very long in open air. The heater must be designed to insure that there is no air gap between the heater and the nozzle at Operating temperature. SQUARE COIL HEATERS will relax and allow air gaps to form which in turn reduces the life of the heater.
The Brass Bushings used on IMPERIUM heaters are produced on CNC equipment. This insures the cold clearance will consistently be 0.0015” per side. Since brass has a higher coefficient of expansion than the steel nozzle the heater will lock up to the nozzle at about 250 F. This insures a tight fit that will not change over time.
HIGH WATT DENSITY
The design of Imperium Heaters allow for higher watt densities in the same heater size such as cam locks or square coils. This is possible because of the tight fit up of the brass bushing.
To offer a sense of the increased wattage available, we recently redesigned a 19.05mm ID x 30mm Long heater with 300 watts. We were able to offer a brass design with the same size but with 400 watts.
HIGHER OPERATING TEMPERATURES
There is a constant need for higher operating temperatures to be able to process newer polymer grades. Imperium Brass Bushing Heaters offer the capability of not only higher operating temps but extended heater life.
A recent Polymer Cleaning Technology client that had been processing a High temperature grade of Polycarbonate at 690 degrees (F) was experiencing up to 100 heater failures per year. After making the switch to Imperium Brass, the client is down to under 10 per year
Comparison: Brass vs. Steel and Ceramic Hot Runner Heaters
Steel
Steel is a durable option but falls short in thermal efficiency. Its lower conductivity often results in uneven heat distribution, necessitating additional energy input to achieve consistent results.

Ceramic
Ceramics excel in high-temperature applications and are lightweight. However, their brittleness makes them less reliable for heaters subjected to mechanical stress or frequent thermal cycling.

While imperium brass excels in most general applications requiring excellent thermal conductivity and moderate durability, it may not always be the best choice in scenarios involving extreme mechanical stress or temperatures:
Real-World Applications and Benefits
Imperium Brass is particularly effective in applications requiring precise temperature control, such as multi-cavity molds. Their ability to maintain consistent heat across the nozzle and sprue bushing reduces scrap rates and enhances throughput. Additionally, these heaters contribute to reduced downtime by offering greater reliability and longevity compared to traditional materials.
Boosting Hot Runner System Efficiency with Imperium Brass
For injection molding professionals, selecting the right part material is essential for achieving optimal performance. Imperium Brass is the gold standard for hot runner nozzles, providing unmatched thermal efficiency, durability, and cost savings over their lifecycle.
Conclusion
Imperium Brass has solidified its position as the most optimal material for nozzle heaters, brass bushing heaters, and hot runner heaters in injection molding. Its unmatched thermal conductivity ensures consistent heat distribution, while its durability and corrosion resistance make it a reliable and cost-effective choice for demanding manufacturing environments. Compared to steel and ceramic alternatives, Imperium Brass offers superior energy efficiency and reduced maintenance, contributing to better product quality, lower scrap rates, and a more sustainable manufacturing process.
By choosing Imperium Brass for hot runner nozzle heaters and sprue bushing heaters, manufacturers can enhance production efficiency, reduce operational costs, and meet the rising demand for precision and sustainability in the modern injection molding industry.
